Coverage for OTC At-Home COVID-19 Tests Through the NJ BAC Health Fund

As you may have heard or read, starting on January 15, 2022, group health plans are required to cover over-the-counter (OTC) at-home COVID-19 tests without participant cost-sharing, preauthorization, or medical management, even if no health care provider was involved in ordering the test. As this requirement was just announced last week, the Health Fund and its vendors are currently working together to determine how to administer this new benefit.

At this time, we have not yet determined whether health providers and/or pharmacies will be reimbursed directly for the tests, or whether participants will need to purchase the tests and submit claims for reimbursement. We are hopeful that SAVRx will provide a way to cover the tests through the prescription drug program so you can purchase them at no cost, but we do not know for sure if that program will meet all of the government requirements.

As soon as we know how the new OTC at-home test program will be administered, we will send out more information. In the meantime, please keep receipts for any OTC Covid-19 tests you purchase on or after January 15, 2022, and the box the test comes in, in case you need that to get reimbursed.

*Note: that the federal government will deliver to each household 4 free at-home COVID tests. You can order them now at covidtests.gov
